This is Us originally began as an 80-page movie script that Dan Fogelman was developing while working for ABC Studios in the spring of 2015. The story line, which Fogelman admitted to not having a definite direction, revolved around the lives of eight adults who, as it would be revealed, were octuplets. Despite positive reviews from both 20th Century Fox Television and sister company, Fox, there were concerns regarding the lack of views it would attract on the network, leading Fox to sell it to NBC. On September 27, 2016, NBC picked up the series for a full season of 18 episodes. In January 2017, NBC renewed the series for two additional seasons of 18 episodes each.
In May 2019, NBC renewed the series for three additional seasons. On May 12, 2021, it was announced that the series would conclude with the sixth season. Many hardcore This Is Us fans love the show because of how it deals with the Pearsons' grief over the loss of Jack , whose death in the mid-'90s still shadows the family in their current lives. For those looking for other shows that provide cathartic release over the loss of a parent, we recommend Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist.
While the musical sequences are spectacular, Zoey's sings because of the grounded emotional turmoil within the show. Zoey gains this mystical power at a time when she crucially needs to figure out how to connect to other people, and her journey to becoming a more open and understanding person is a beautiful one to watch. More specifically, how her gift allows her to connect with her father on a deeper level during his final days is simultaneously heartbreaking and endearing in a way that This Is Us fans will truly appreciate. For bonus points, Zoey's Emmy-winning choreographer is also named Mandy Moore, so the similarities keep growing. The commentary from the cast in the aforementioned video is intercut with scenes from the past seasons of This Is Us and the montage mostly focuses on the Pearson characters.
Rightfully so, the series is about the collective life of the family, starting with Jack and Rebecca's introduction and eventual marriage. Due to its unique storytelling format, it's able to connect things that happened in the past to what the Big Three are going through in the present time. Importantly, it allows the show to continue featuring Jack who has died back decades ago. So while the individual arcs of the kids are going to be significant, expect that This Is Us will continue to be the Pearsons' overall journey.
AsThis is Us season 6 builds towards the series' conclusion, long-time viewers are finally being rewarded with payoffs that have been in the works since the show's first fast-forward scene with Kate and Toby in season 2. The opening episodes ofThis is Us season 6 have deftly approached the crumbling of Kate and Toby's marriage, it has slowly filled in holes in the narrative that have left audiences unsure of the outcome for the two beloved characters. Still, the exact status of Kate and Toby's relationship has remained a mystery thus far. Even if Kate thinks she is considering a life in San Francisco, she is nowhere near where Toby is and that becomes an immediate problem. In between lots of calls and work stuff — when does Toby have time to charge those AirPods? — Toby wants to show Kate everything San Fran has to offer … and also show her a house that he is ready to put a bid on.
All of it is overwhelming, from the overplanning to the presumption that they are definitely moving here. But Kate mostly goes along with it in an effort to show she is trying. It's only when at a cocktail party with Toby's work colleagues Kate learns her husband recently turned down a job offer in Los Angeles that she's finally had enough. In her bones, Madison always knew Kevin wasn't in love with her. Last week's episode of This Is Us kicked off the final season's Big Three trilogy, which has become a show tradition. Kevin had a confidence problem throughout three time periods, which set the tone for the rest of the story. This week, the spotlight is on Kate and the issues she faces, while Kevin's story unfolds in parallel or overlapping moments. While Kevin longs to jump from the diving board into the deep end on the day of the Pearson family's pool vacation, Kate refuses to try swimming on her own. But through breadcrumb-style flash-forward scenes, the show has brilliantly woven a tapestry of clues, hints, mysteries, and hope, all wrapped up in the family lore of the Pearsons. And while it doesn't bode well for Kate and Toby in the near future, it seems impossible that Kate Pearson, the heart of the Big Three, won't be given the happy ending she deserves. Giving audiences the satisfaction of seeing her success and joy is a must for This is Us's final season, especially if they must first watch Katoby implode. If you're here, you already know that you love crying, and it just so happens that Atypical is the kind of show that will absolutely move you to tears several times a season.

But, the creator confirmed to Variety, it'll also tie up some loose story threads relating to the past — most importantly, how widow Rebecca Pearson came to be married to her late husband's best friend, Miguel . I think we can all admit that it's hard to create a show that stands out, As we are at a time where television is at it's pinnacle point. Just like the facts that were stated in the beginning of the show. What sets this show apart from most, isn't the ending, But the journey you take in-between. There's no coming back from the things Kate and Toby say and the realizations they have while Kate heads to San Francisco for the weekend in an effort to fix what's broken between them. And just like in the last four years, This Is Us season 5 utilized this to drop an unexpected revelation that will be central to the show's remaining run. Coming into This Is Us season 6, this will be among the primary points of interest for viewers, but there's more to it than that. The stars of NBC's hit family drama This Is Us preview what to expect from the show's upcoming sixth season which will also be its final outing.

"There's a lot of closure, but there's also new beginnings," Chrissy Metz said . The series follows the lives of siblings Kevin, Kate, and Randall (known as the "Big Three"), and their parents Jack and Rebecca Pearson. It takes place mainly in the present and uses flashbacks to show the family's past. Kevin and Kate are the two surviving members from a triplet pregnancy, born six weeks premature on Jack's 36th birthday in 1980; their brother Kyle is stillborn. Jack dies when his children are 17 and Rebecca later marries Jack's best friend Miguel. Randall becomes a successful finance professional and marries college classmate Beth; they raise two daughters and adopt a third, Deja.
Kevin becomes a successful actor while struggling to be taken seriously. After lacking direction much of her life, Kate meets and marries Toby, pursues a career in music, gets a degree, and becomes a mother. On May 12, 2019, NBC renewed the series for its fourth, fifth and sixth seasons, at 18 episodes each, for a total of 54 additional episodes. The season was confirmed to be the final season in May 2021. The move was actually a last-minute decision for the network because cast contracts were set to expire the next day.
It was also surprising for some newer fans since the show was at the top of the Netflix Top 10 as more people binged the series for the first time. The beloved NBC drama This Is Us became notable for its heartwrenching storylines when it first landed on screens in 2016. Despite its success, the emotional series will officially conclude after season six and Justin Hartley warned fans about the fate of his character, Kevin.
Of course, she misses that part of her life and who Toby was to her. I think everybody loves the beginning of relationships, the honeymoon phase, because it is the fun part. We always tend to remember all the good and we forget to play the whole tape.
I think old Toby for Kate is like her playing the old tape of this is all the things that I fell in love with him about. But at the same time, when he starts to make fun of Toby's clothes I think she realizes, "Oh, it's fun to commiserate with her subconscious," which old Toby is for her. She also has this understanding that she loves this person and he might have changed but he's not a bad person. Toby apologizes for the house's great gesture gone wrong.
Kate tells him she's just trying to figure out what's going on. Toby proposes they take a Lyft instead of walking to his boss's house for the cocktail party they're attending because the trek is all uphill. Sadly, this development of Kate and Toby appears to be creating a rift that cannot be repaired.
And because This is Us continues to dole out details about the far future in tiny scraps, the final revelations about the Damons' relationship may not be revealed until This is Us season 6 concludes. With at least a 10-year jump occurring between the present storyline and the scenes depicting the Pearson family saying goodbye to Rebecca, there is still plenty of time for the story to surprise and delight audiences. It's brutal to hear Toby explain that the old version of himself that Kate loved so much was a coping mechanism for a miserable, insecure, self-loathing person. But what's nice about "The Hill" is that it roots itself in the positives of this situation as much as the negatives.
When Randall and Beth were having martial problems back in season three, the show framed divorce as the worst possible thing that could happen to them. Here, however—particularly because of the flashfoward forewarnings—there's hope to the idea of Kate and Toby splitting up and getting to live the lives that make them happiest. Their time together allowed them both to become better, more self-actualized people.
But that doesn't mean they need to cling to their relationship if it's no longer serving them. It's a big swing artistic choice that made me nervous at first. Kate cites Fight Club as a parallel for her imaginary Toby and there are moments where it does kind of feel like she's slipping into full-on psychosis as she argues with her Husband of Christmas Past.
